When Your Relationship With An Animal Matters This Much:
Grief after losing a pet can feel isolating, confusing, and deeply painful.

For many people, relationships with animals are deeply meaningful. Losing a dog, cat, or beloved pet can feel overwhelming, especially when others don’t fully understand the depth of that loss. Pets often provide comfort, routine, safety, and connection — sometimes during seasons when human relationships feel complicated or limited.

When a pet becomes ill, ages, or dies, the emotional impact can be intense. And yet, this kind of grief is often overlooked or minimized. You may feel pressure to move on, second-guess your decisions, or carry your grief quietly.

Here, the bond you shared with your animal is taken seriously.

How Pet Loss and the Human-Animal Bond Show Up In Therapy:

Support related to the human–animal bond is an important focus within my individual therapy work. This means making space to explore how your relationship with an animal — past or present — connects to your emotional world, attachment patterns, and sense of safety.

Clients often bring concerns such as:

  • Grief after losing a beloved pet

  • Coping with the loss of a dog, cat, or companion animal

  • Anticipatory grief related to aging, illness, or end-of-life decisions

  • Emotional strain and burnout while caring for a pet with chronic or complex medical needs

  • Guilt, doubt, or lingering “what-ifs” around medical or euthanasia decisions

  • Losses that stir up earlier grief or attachment wounds

  • Feeling isolated or misunderstood in their grief

This work allows room for the full range of emotions, without judgment or timelines.

When we hold the human–animal bond as part of therapy, we can:

  • Process grief in a way that feels safe and contained

  • Explore the meaning of the bond you shared

  • Notice how this relationship shaped your sense of connection or security

  • Gently work with complicated emotions such as guilt, relief, anger, or sadness

  • Support grounding and emotional regulation during acute grief

There is no expectation to feel a certain way, and no pressure to “move on.”

What Pet Loss Therapy Can Offer:

While I offer emotional support related to caregiving, grief, and end-of-life decisions for pets, including euthanasia, I do not provide veterinary medical advice. Therapy focuses on emotional processing and support alongside the guidance of your veterinary team.

A Note On Medical Decisions:

If you’re grieving the loss of a pet or facing an end-of-life decision, you don’t have to carry that alone. This space is here to honor that bond and support you through it.
